![]() Photo by Dan Milner Ewan Wallace 'world class snowboarder' is a well-played record. But there's much more to him than meets the eye. If you've read our interview with him in the latest issue (no. 13, out now - buy here) you'll know that some of his secrets include playing in the Bonobo band and, er, shaking up cans of coke. Here he shares a few more tales and confessions with a Stranger. Words by Marcus Chapman What's the most successful blag you've pulled off? ![]() Illustration by Rose Darling How did you realise that you had a skill for playing the guitar? Just because when I started learning I picked it up a bit quicker than most people I knew. Did you teach yourself or did you have someone that inspired you? I'm fully self-taught, but I was inspired by my oldest brother who played a bit. And since I was so shit at football I had plenty of time on my hands to learn. When you're under pressure from both snowboarding and music, which one do you feel most confident with? Neither, to be honest. I hate pressure of any kind, which is why I've never competed in snowboarding. I think I'm more confident at playing guitars than I am at riding snowboards though. ![]() I know you have a phobia of phones - where does that stem from? My mum I think. She never answers the phone, and I grew up with phones being treated as intrusive things that were only to be answered if you were in the mood. I've had a blissful two months without phones since mine died (well, since I threw it out of the fifth floor of an apartment in Morzine) the day after new year. I'm still paying for the fucker though. What's the trait you most deplore in yourself? Negativity. My first reaction to things is always 'can't do', and I often find I can only get round it out of contrariness (ie if someone tells me I can't). Which is the other trait I most deplore in myself. ![]() When did you last cry and why? Hmmm, I can't remember exactly. Probably a vicious dumping I had from a longterm girlfriend about three years back. Though I was pretty freaked out when I saw my dog get run over by a car, and that must have come close. Fortunately she was fine. Secret teller or secret keeper? Secret keeper I hate? Mobile telephones, feeling hungover, rudeness, hurrying, impatience I love? Eating. As much and as often as possible!
