Events are taking place across the globe on 5
June to celebrate World Environment Day.
This year, the focus is on the effect
climate change is having on polar ecosystems and communities, as well as the
ensuing global consequences (in accordance with 2007/2008 being International Polar Year). World Environment Day is hosted by a different
city each year, and in 2007 its base will be in
Tromsø,
Norway - also known as ‘The
Gateway to the
Arctic’.
There are numerous events happening in the
UK too. An
eco-car rally, Revolve, will take place from Brighton to
London,
while exhibitions are being held in
Cardiff,
Liverpool and
Oxford,
amongst other places.
For a complete list of events, visit the
official World Environment Day website by clicking here.
The day was originally set up in 1972 by
the United Nations in an effort to stimulate public awareness towards the
environment.
