Surfers and fishermen in Cornwall are being encouraged to wear sunglasses and protect their eyesight in a new campaign held by Cornwall's Blind Association. 'Be Bright for Sight' pamphlets of information will be placed with tidetables around the county after the charity's research showed that many people who spend whole days on the beaches are unaware of the serious risks, which the sunlight's invisible rays can have on our eyesight. "Each day we see clients with a range of sight conditions in our clinics," said co-ordinator, Julie Pomery. "Surfers and fishermen in Cornwall spend many hours outside on the beaches and on the water. We want everyone to protect their sight because harmful UVA and UVB rays from the sunlight are much higher near water due to reflected light." The charity are also trying to target young people after research showed that the outcome of overexposure to the sun's harmful UV rays at the coastline from an early age can be eye disease and even blindness. Writer and Stranger contributor, Sam Bleakley is a Multiple European and British Longboard Champion from Cornwall. As a professional surfer, he supports this recent campaign: "I have spent my youth, teens and working life-so-far around the sea. The stunning county of Cornwall is bathed in reflected light and the wet glare of the Atlantic Ocean is never far away. This can be both enhancing and harmful for our lifestyles. I have to wear good quality sunglasses at every opportunity to keep my senses sharp for the future. You should do the same." ![]() British Longboard Champion Sam Bleakley. Photography by Mike Newman.
