Falmouth Sound live music eventLATEST UPDATE: Falmouth Sound has been cancelled. The following is an official statement from the organisers of Falmouth Sound 09:

"It is with deep regret that we announce that Falmouth Sound will not be going ahead this year. It has been an agonising decision on our part as we have spent so much time and money trying to bring this high quality music event to the town. Unfortunately due to difficult economic conditions advanced ticket sales have not reached a point that would warrant staging such a large-scale event. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our team for their hard work and those people who purchased tickets and supported the event."

Ticket holders are advised to contact the ticket retailer they purchased from direct to arrange a full refund. Those people who purchased from the beach hut ticket office at Events Square will be contacted by the Falmouth Sound team shortly.

A new high-end music event, Falmouth Sound 2009, will hit the town's streets for two days this August bank holiday weekend, boasting an impressive and eclectic line-up of great indie, ska, reggae and folk acts.

After years of hard work, the team of live music lovers at Falmouth Sound have managed to secure a great line-up of high quality, critically acclaimed and credible artists for this new event - something the dirge of Lucie da Silva-esque pop divas and dodgy 1970s cover bands so far has sadly lacked. "We've been working really hard over the last couple of years to try and bring a really serious live music event to Falmouth," says event coordinator, Dashiel Mundig. "I think there's an audience for a top end annual gig, and now we've got such a great line up locked in I think we're going to have a great first year."

The Wombats to play at Falmouth Sound
He might just be right. This year's inaugural event will play host to technicolour indie rockers (and winners of NME's Best Dancefloor Filler for their song 'Let's Dance to Joy Division') The Wombats on Saturday, supported by The Boxer Rebellion, Fink, Foy Vance and Melo Park. If that's not your cup of earl grey, Sunday welcomes a very different vibe to Falmouth with the most famous reggae band in the world, The Wailers, headlining after sets from Neville Staple, Gabbidon and legendary DJ and producer Pete King.

Ice Cold Idiots to play Falmouth SoundSeveral local acts will also play throughout the day. Two particularly lucky bands from the town's talent have won the opportunity to open the event in a competition held earlier this month. With a combined aged of just 36, pint-sized rockers Ice Cold Idiots will kick off Falmouth Sound on Saturday whilst Julian Gaskell and his Ragged Trousered Philanthropists will open Sunday's music with a unique blend of stomping skiffle that should not be missed. Go to the Falmouth Sound website for full details on all the acts. (Rachel James)
