Fancy feeling frightened? After some spooky family fun? This weekend Halloween hits Penryn with a festival celebrating all that is scary in Cornwall’s oldest town.
A collaboration between Trifle Gathering Productions, Scary Little Girls and the artistic community of Penryn, The Great Dark Gathering invites ghosts and ghouls to come out to play for three days of creepy fun.
Friday night is trick or treating time, but we’re not talking harmless kiddies and sugary sweets. Instead it’s a chance to take a tour down dark alleys and into odd, old buildings to experience work from regionally and nationally acclaimed artists. Expect scary surprises, new and original performances and a turn from spiritualist Sharon Andrews too.
From exotic potions to fancy dress, Saturday’s Jiggery Pokery play workshop is a great way for kids to celebrate the season, while in the evening the Feral Fling sees a wild and wicked parade weave its way through Penryn to Jubilee Wharf where the haunting strains of piano and strings from singer-songwriter Kate Kerrow, the pulsating rhythms of The Devil’s Hat Band and the electro vibe of Something Like Kicking Dolls await.
Winding up on Sunday afternoon, The Great Dark Gathering comes to a close with Cha Cha Cha’s tea dance which aims to bring together fans of vintage fashion and music with the folk that were doing it the first time around. Compères Miss Foxy Trot and Mr Darcy Dapper call dances, demonstrate steps and ask to lead you onto the floor.
On top of all that there's a horror films, seances, markets and much more.
Spending the weekend scaring ourselves silly? Sounds good.
