The BIG Fitness FUNdraiser

Are you interested in supporting charities but giving you money direct to the people who really need it? Want to show your support to a good cause without committing to a five-hour marathon? Then grab a few friends and slink down to The BIG Fitness FUNdraiser in Falmouth on the 16th October.

The event is being held with the aim to raise money and even more importantly, awareness of Diabetes and Breast cancer, two diseases not normally associated with young people.

Even if you're just interested in getting fit and shaking off those almost-winter blues, this is a perfect opportunity to get involved. For only £5, you get a whole evening of different exercise sessions with the best instructors in Cornwall. For those of you who prefer a slightly more relaxed approach to fitness, you'll also find beauticians, chiropractors and holistic therapists on hand to give treatments and advice, not forgetting cakes and yummy refreshments (which Stranger is particularly pleased about!)

The event will be held at the Dracaena Youth and Community Centre in Falmouth from 5.30-9.30pm.

The BIG Fitness Fundraising idea was born when Helen Tite, whose 8-year-old daughter Maddie suffers from Diabetes mellitus, met twins Kristin and Maren Hallenga.

23-year-old Kristin Hallenga was eventually diagnosed with secondary breast cancer in February this year, after doctors initially tried to explain that the pain in her breasts was hormonal. Due to Kristin's young age, doctors were reluctant to accept that she could have cancer. After being misdiagnosed twice, it was only when Kristin's mother pushed doctors for a referral that the tumors on Kristin's spine and breast were discovered. Six months had passed since the first misdiagnosis and precious time was lost.

After overcoming the shock of being told she had cancer, Kristin devoted her time to fighting the disease and raising awareness with other young people about the risks. With the support of her twin sister and friends, she formed her own charity, Coppafeel.

Coppafeel gained massive support, with Kristin's inspirational attitude and determination to raise awareness of the disease leading to her recently winning a Pride of Britain Award. Kristin has also been invited to visit the Prime Minister in recognition of her inspiring work.
