The Beck Mickle ‘low head’ Micro Hydro can operate in rivers as shallow as 20cm, converting around 70% of the water that passes through it into usable energy. It’s estimated that the generator could provide electricity to over 50,000 UK homes in the future, cutting carbon emission levels completely. While normal waterwheels let water escape during rotation, the Beck Mickle Hydro keeps it for the full drop of the device, creating usable energy in the process. Its creator, Ian Gilmartin, had the initial idea around three years ago. He told Stranger: “The entire thing is made out of recycled products, and it’s such a simple device – I can’t believe it hasn’t been thought of before. It just looks like any other waterwheel.” The device is expected to go on sale in late 2007 at an initial cost of
£2000 per home. A bit steep, you might think, but the Beck Mickle Hydro
is predicted to pay for itself within two years and greatly reduce
household bills thereafter!

A simple waterwheel could become a major provider of electricity, after
previously untapped energy sources were opened up while the device was
being tested near Windermere, Cumbria.
