Cornwall's ground breaking wave energy project was put on hold this week as plans to lay 25km of underwater cable were delayed. Thanks to a winch problem and adverse weather conditions, the cable, which was set to be laid from open sea into Hayle Towans, remains on board the Nordica, moored two km offshore. A core part of the £42 million initiative to harness wave power on the sea surface and channel it through to power units on land, which in turn link to the National Grid, the cable will eventually be floated to shore from the Nordica on a high tide. From here it will be being winched up the beach to a nearby electricity substation. The Nordica will then head a further 14km out to sea to the wave hub device's final location deploying the rest of the cable as it sails. The cable-laying process looks set to start up again on Saturday, so that things can get back on schedule, with wave hub tests planned for the early autumn. It might seem geeky, but as a pioneering step forward for sustainable energy we're fascinated by the wave hub and will be keeping you updated on the installation's progress...
