BUSTIN' DOWN THE DOOR - THE SURF REVOLUTION OF '75 BY SHAUN TOMSON PDF Print
Reviews - Books

ImageBustin' Down the Door tells the story of a pivotal time in surf history, where a group of surfers shared a dream and shaped surfing into what it is today. It reads a little bit like Groundhog Day, where accounts of the same event are told by Shaun Tomson, Rabbit Bartholemew, Mark Richards, Peter Townend, Ian Cairns and Mike Tomson. Although this can be a little repetitive, it's interesting to get the different perspectives of the pioneers of the time.

All the surfers in the book shared a similar vision of taking their shortboarding skills to the epic waves of Pipeline and Sunset. Bustin' charts the way in which the revolution occurred through high energy, big dreams and a fair measure of cockiness - which got them noticed but didn't make them an instant hit with the locals. Still, change doesn't happen by gently knocking on the door and they were well aware that they needed to go in hard in order to make things happen.

The book's size makes it prime coffee table fodder, and it's ideal to dive into for a taste of sunshine and nostalgia. Bustin' is divided into two sections; the first combines the autobiographies with Dan Merkel's evocative photography; while the second  comprises full-page pictures with quotes. Dan Merkel's photos capture the sense of fashion, attitude and friendship of the surfers, giving you a real insight into this iconic moment in time.

It was the vision of these surfers that formed the ASP's 'Dream Tour' that we know today and the book is an inspiring record of how people's dreams can make things happen. (Jacqueline Wild)

Bustin' down the Door is accompanied by a documentary, narrated by Edward Norton and you can watch a trailer of the film here:
