Arctic MonkeysThe huge success of Whatever People Say I am, That’s What I’m Not, meant that the follow up was always going to be received with baited breath. And Favourite Worst Nightmare doesn’t disappoint, offering up plenty more of what made the first record so vital.

But thankfully it does offer some surprises too with a deeper, darker sound, found on tracks such as ‘This House is a Circus’, ‘If You Were There, Beware’ and ‘505’. And of course it’s all woven together by Alex Turner’s ability to tell a story – humour and pathos and an eye for detail giving his words an importance and an integrity that belie but don’t extinguish his youthfulness.

Who knows if this record will cement Arctic Monkey’s place as a truly great British rock band? Me? I’m just looking forward to Glastonbury. (Lauren Faulkner)
