Most of the material dates back to the 60s and early 70s, when natives of Spanish Harlem were translating black American music into their own thing, namely Latin boogaloo and Nuyorican soul. Following Gilles Peterson’s first instalment in the Fania DJ series, our man Format doesn’t miss a beat; mixing his selection superbly to create an hour of non-stop, dancefloor-friendly material. Classics by the likes of Tito Puente and Ray Barretto are combined with rare nuggets, such as the original of Dave Cortez’s ‘Happy Soul With A Hook’, which Format remixed recently. Perfect to shake a leg to this summer- just be sure to let those burritos and margaritas settle before you cut some rug...
