G Love at The Walkabout, Newquay, May 24 2007

G LoveOn tour in the UK to promote his forthcoming album, Lemonade, G Love stopped by The Walkabout in Newquay to deliver some of his finest musical beverage.

Martin Harley kicked off proceedings with his heavy blues three-piece, warming up the masses in an already sub-tropical environment; it was enough for G Love to unbutton his shirt dangerously low (which didn’t go unnoticed by the ladies, I hear from a reliable source...).

Soon after Martin Harley’s blistering blues set, an unlikely bunch of dudes, better known as the Special Sauce, stepped up. Special? I’ll say- not only do they provide a solid musical backing to G Love’s hip hop infused rootsy soul-blues (or whatever you want to call it); but the drummer was spotted backstage during an acoustic interval in nothing but a towel and a pair of knee-high socks.

G Love, on the other hand, stepped up looking rather dapper in a sharp suit and matching trilby. Two sets followed, or depending how you viewed it, one set was followed by a very long encore.

There is something about the way G Love delivers his music, almost sharing it in an intimate fashion to musically converse with the punters, making for a warm crowd reception every time. At one point he even borrowed some girl’s camera phone to play slide guitar. A good mix of old and new material, plus some unexpected covers (Lou Reed’s ‘Walk On The Wild Side’, for example) was delivered in Philly’s finest form. Too bad someone forgot to turn on the air conditioning. (Nick Radford)

Thanks to SW1 Productions for putting on the show.
