On one hand you can't help but admire the talents of songwriter Sean O'Hagan, such is the quality of some of the instrumentation on this. Luscious harmonies combine with delicate string arrangements to produce a batch of quintessentially English sounding songs. On the other hand, it borders on being incredibly dull. Overall, the feel is more 'intellectual lounge jazz' than the summer pop you feel they're aiming for. There are sporadic moments of pop greatness in tracks such as 'Rollin', 'Winter's Day' and 'The Old Spring Town'. But apart from these, standouts tend to be sections of music rather than entire songs. An album to be loved by their small, loyal fan base, but not one destined to bring their talent to mainstream attention. (Tim Hill) |

The "UK's most reclusive band" make another album brimming full of
sophistication, imagination and musical integrity. Shame it's not much
fun.
