"Scientifically proven as the perfect
soundtrack to any barbecue, or any other outdoor, meat-related gathering…" One
can't help but think that Leisure Records have been rather unfortunate to release
a compilation of reggae, hip hop and balmy beats in this sorry excuse for
summer.
You can imagine the rational thought process that went into producing
this record. ‘Showcase for the label?’ (tick), ‘release in summer?’ (tick), ‘catchy
description?’ (tick). The only thing left was to watch the money roll in. Oh,
cruel fate!
Barbecue
Beats is still a lot of fun though, and - if you
ignore the title - a great little mix to bop around to in the car. I could wax
lyrical about the track ‘35 Summers’ which has been on constant repeat on my
iPod. The tracklisting is also well thought out, and runs smoothly through the
different genres on offer.
Despite trailing off into a couple of
mediocre bonus tracks, Barbecue Beats is
a real hoot. I predict a re-release when global-warming is back on track. (Pete
