The Lemonheads had everything a band needed. They rocked, they had integrity, lead singer Evan Dando had poster-boy looks and wrote some of the most heartfelt pop songs of his time – all while making it look a piece of piss. In other words, the Lemonheads were just about the coolest band on the planet to be a fan of.
Dando went on to become an icon for high school slackers everywhere, and the lazy aura the man oozed filters out through his songs – they all sound effortless. Anyone who ever smoked a joint can't help but smile at the charm of 'My Drug Buddy', elsewhere the final refrain of 'Rudderless' stands out as one of many album highlights. As Dando repeats "It's like a ship without a rudder", it’s this sense of no direction that was the major appeal to teenagers then and is still as relevant today. |
