MasterCuts - Soul Sessions This 3CD compilation racks up some of the great and good of the soul community. Unfortunately, they are mostly singing other people’s songs.

Billy Paul makes an appearance with a wholly unnecessary Al Green standard, while Bobby Womack does his best Sam Cooke impression with ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’. It’s a version that many people will already know, but few could ever truly prefer. Meanwhile, someone (not even worth naming) offers up such a truly heinous rendition of ‘Let’s Get It On’ that it actually made us quite angry inside.

There are a few fleeting gems though - courtesy of Gil Scott-Heron, The Isley Brothers and Sly & The Family Stone originals. But really, there’s very little here that any soul fan worth their Detroit/Philly salt wouldn’t already own.

Cheap and nasty, they shouldn’t even be allowed to print the word ‘soul’ on the cover… (Junior Morris)
