"Steeped in the sound and textures of 1960s soul, 1950s rock'n'roll and doo-wop, it's an album that's vintage in flavour yet utterly contemporary in spirit" – for once the PR description is spot on! This revivalist album is full of bolshie attitude and haunting but realistic lyrics. No newcomer to success, Spiteri was a pop princess of the 1990s as frontwoman of Texas and this woman could rock with the best of them. Now with Melody, Spiteri shows that she can hold her own alongside a new generation of retro-obsessive singers like Amy Winehouse, Duffy and Adele. Melody is her dream album with overtones of Johnny Cash, Elvis, Motown and the Righteous Brothers thrown in.
Spiteri has great range in her voice from sexy-grating, hitting the high-notes and producing smooth, velvety sounds. It’s no wonder that she is one of the most successful women in British music of the past two decades.
Melody is great loud and will even have your shoes singing. (Joanna Stevens) |
