The second installment of Harmless Recording's Watch The Ride series has moments of brilliance, but fails to strike a chord.
This compilation sees Groove Armada's Tom Findlay, recently attached to project Sugardaddy (dance music with a 'black' 80s edge, collaborating with David Jordon, Tim Hutton and Jack Splash) pull together a host of contemporary dance music from the likes of Lindstrom, Claude Von Stroke, The Greenskeepers and Kaos - with average results.
Hidden amongst this fifteen-tracks are a few Sugardaddy exclusives, one of which is definitely the best of the bunch. 'Chasing My Tail' is a thumper of a tune with all the prime ingredients for a dance floor filler. When the catchy guitar riff kicks in, this tune transforms into much more than you'd expect from the opening bars.
But even a gem like that can't save Watch the Ride from mediocrity. Overall, it's just a fairly standard ensemble that would have benefited from a heavier dusting of Sugardaddy's own sounds. (Holly Wicks)
