Apparently much more accessible than their previous outings and “more related to pop themes” (in their own words), Good Arrows is essentially an album of songs about everyday life, viewed with a sideways glance. It's all fire crackle samples, children shouting and overheard conversations, and basically, it's got enough experimentation to keep the folkists happy combined with a previously unseen splattering of inventive pop to cater for the mainstream market. This combination can be heard to full effect on ‘Bullets’ with its inspired lyrics, and on ‘Bricks’, with its quirky slide guitar and organic Bontempi beat. In short, Good Arrows is an immersive leftfield pop album that quietly seeps into your conscious, takes hold, then won’t let go. Very well done. |

This is folktronica, Jim, but not as we know it. Lilting plucked
guitars and brush drums it may have, but the third album from Tunng is
a bit more pop than your average.
