Ah yes, the British winter. Rain, Hogmanay & The Lash. If only you were slumming it in Polynesia, eh?

A Broke Down Melody (in case you haven't seen it) is a film following a group of surfers chasing waves across America and the Pacific – so you do get a few obvious choices on the OST. The obligatory reggae/dub cuts are here, courtesy of the great Johnny Osbourne and Culver City Dub Collective.

But in the spirit of keeping things eclectic, a number of wildcards are thrown in too - from Eddie Vedder to The Beta Band. Now, these anomalies aren't exactly in the Dick Dale school of surf rock, so you do find yourself wondering why they're included at all. We'd wager that the answer to that is quite simple: A Broke Down Melody is so eager-to-please that it happily chucked any old crap on the OST.

For once though, as about half the tunes here prove, that's not an entirely bad thing. (Matt Wilkinson)
