Stranger Collective wrote all the copy for this 64-page interactive guide to the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site. As well as 10 in-depth chapters covering the 'Areas' that make up the Cornwall and West Devon World Heritage Site, the guide includes a creative activities section.
One of the key objectives of the Mine & Yours campaign was to encourage people to contribute ideas, suggestions and creative work - for use on both the Mine & Yours website and future editions of the book. Our first task was to establish the right communicative style and tone of voice to engage and excite an incredibly broad target audience, motivating them to visit the Areas and share their own experiences with the broader campaign.
By nature, the main focus of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site is industrial heritage and its impact on the way we live today. We therefore had to find the right language to relate key historical information without alienating or discouraging today's visitors of all ages, nationalities and social backgrounds - while still paying the utmost attention to factual accuracy and historical relevance.
Working closely with Cornwall County Council, Cornwall Culture and the designers, Empress Design and Lowe Studio, we produced a copy template for - and subsequently wrote and edited - the 10 'destination guide' chapters that formed the backbone of the book. Each chapter included:
- an evocative introduction to draw people to the Area
- a Practicalities section covering essentials like transport, parking, and eating and drinking in the Area
- a Highlights section, pulling out the most historically interesting or visually pleasing places to visit
- a Discover section, covering Industry, Nature and Times Past
- a Sense It! section to encourage people to appreciate each Area beyond its mining history
- a Do It! section, offering different suggestions for activities people can do and share with the Mine & Yours campaign
We also wrote a Do It! chapter, giving readers ideas and practical tips for a range of creative activities, including: collaging, drawing and painting, taking photos, making videos, creative writing, researching family history, exploring rockpools and map making.
