Time to give the dull grey matter a full-on workout: ‘Braindance’ – a
new monthly night of alternative, leftfield, and downright danceable
music from the legends behind Rephlex Records – is coming to the
Sandsifter.
Kicking off on 19 April, the third Saturday of every month will be the musical remedy your brain has been waiting for. Braindance will be offering the latest sounds alongside classics from every genre of dance music – electro, techno, drum and bass, breaks, house, hip hop, dancehall, grime, disco, funk and hardcore, with a classic roster of Rephlex artists like Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Luke Vibert, Leila and, yes really, 808 State at the helm.
Pioneering the underground music scene in Cornwall 20 years ago, at a time when the mainstream scene was saturated in cheesy pop, rock and Jethro, DJs Grant Wilson-Claridge and Richard D James were purveyors of quality electro, house, techno and hip hop at a handful of nights around Cornwall that are now the stuff of legend. They went on to form the cult label, Rephlex, which has released around 200 albums by more than 50 international artists over the past 16 years, and gained some valuable admirers along the way. Described by NME as, “the coolest record label on Earth”, and by Guardian Guide as “the best electronic music label in the country”, you sure as hell won’t be disappointed.
The vibe of the night is vital to Rephlex: “We want to offer something alternative, inspiring and stylish for the discerning and actively interested ear in Cornwall. We are keeping away from the more common Ibiza, Trance and super-club scene.” Sounds good to us. Be sure to scribble ’19 April, Braindance’ on your hand in indelible ink. (Kezia Clark)
