Zombie Surfers exhibition at The Cell Project Space

An innovative art show in London this month features some fantastic works inspired by obsessions and dreams of surf culture – and yes, that includes turning the whole gallery space into a mythical surf shack.

Zombie Surfers exhibition at The Cell Project SpaceZombie Surfers is a moment inspired by a surf session at Sennen Cove, Cornwall,” says Cell Project Space director, curator and artist, Richard Priestly. “An eerie fog rolled in whilst we were waiting for swell in the line-up, causing a quiet and stillness of the sea, that caused us to lose all sense of direction to the shore. For a while, we and other lost surfer souls drifted in the fog like grey shadows…waiting. Later, back on shore, we encountered a pristine hearse parked by the storm wall. Strapped to its roof were two longboards, and inside, where a coffin might usually be found, two shortboards. The owner was being berated for his lack of respect for the dead.”

Priestly then set out to bring together an exhibition reflecting “the obsessive lengths… that the pursuit of the elusive moment of perfection… drives both surfers and artists to – how we are drawn towards our goal like stumbling zombies”.

Zombie Surfers exhibition at The Cell Project Space Featuring the work of artists from New York to London, Sydney to San Francisco, the calibre of work and the moods it evokes are both impressive and deeply evocative (scroll down for a sneak preview). “The artists selected for Zombie Surfers may not actually be surfers, but this is not a prerequisite,” explains Priestly. “Whilst art and surfing can both be considered as hedonistic pursuits, they are also subcultures with competitive challenges whose pursuit aids personal development.” Artists include: Heidi Britt Anderson, Nina Bovasso, Ellen Cantor, Matt Franks, Shaun Gladwell, Andy Hsu, Mike Paré, Richard Priestly, Joshua Rickards, Cathy Ward & Eric Wright, Paul Wackers, Stephanie Davidson and 'HOT AND COLD' courtesy of Griffin McPartland and Chris Duncan.

Visitors are invited to participate and try smoothies, watch surf films and video based work projected through the shack’s window, leaf through fanzines (including Stranger!), check out the shapers’ room and get up to scratch on the latest eco surf designs, use wifi, play surf tune classics, or just chill out on the beanbags and take it all on. Fear not however; as co-sponsors of the event we have been assured there will be no real zombies present to suck your blood… or steal your smoothie.
